General Furnace specs
The Dragons are designed to be rugged and reliable for years of use as both stationary & travel studios. The size and functionality offer excellent flexibility for use in a variety of possible venues.
The Dragons are furnace/glory hole combos created to make it simple and easy for on-site demonstrations, taking only minutes to set up.
One piece of equipment takes the place of the furnace, glory hole and pipe warmer.
For day use, fill it up with glass (nuggets, recycled bottles, or any kind of cullet) in the morning & turn it on; it takes about three to four hours to get to working temp (depending on the quality of glass desired and how much of a hurry you are in!). Drain the tank at the end of the day and shut it off.
For extended use, fill it up with glass and bring the furnace up to temperature slowly (at minimum, the Proof of Air safety system is recommended for overnight use). Once hot, you can lower the temperature overnight, and raise it again in the morning.
The Dragons are configured to run interchangeably on low-pressure natural gas or propane, consuming on average around 1 gallon of fuel per hour (consumption dependent on site conditions and individual use).
The Standard burner system is removable & very straight forward comprised of 120V blower (220V available for international customers), butterfly valve for air control, needle valve for gas control, & Giberson burner tip. Additional safety systems & auto controls are available and can be configured to your specific needs; please contact us with your specifications.
Our semi-invested crucible (the crucible is backed up with 2" of high strength castable) furnaces are designed with eventual rebuild in mind; the frame can be unbolted at the top and mid sections, allowing access to the inside for crucible replacement.
There is no exposed frax on any of our furnaces.
The footprint of the furnace is 31" (78.74 cm) wide by 34” (86.36 cm) long (not including detachable accessories), designed to fit through a standard 32" (81.28 cm) door opening. It has an overall height of 4'-8" (142.24 cm), just short enough to fit in a U-Haul covered trailer (4'-10" (147.32 cm) opening). 8” diameter steel casters (two rigid, 2 swivel) come standard.
The Dragons are available in four sizes, the Mini (15 lb (7 kg) crucible), Baby (30 lb (13 kg) crucible), the Little (60 lb (27 kg) crucible), and the Big (60 lb (27 kg) or 95 lb (43 kg) crucible). There are several configurations of each size, which are explained in more detail on the following pages. Available options for each configuration are laid out in the product descriptions.
All sizes come equipped with at minimum one Side Port, which allow access to the interior heat of the furnace for the operation of a variety of appliances, such as the CAT-60 Annealing Tube (see pg. 20) and others currently under development (color box, hot marver, annealing oven, baking oven). You can also build your own accessories, using the damper block (see pg. 17).
The Mini Dragon is available in as Standard configuration only.
The Baby & Little Dragons are available in three configurations; Standard, Basic & Double.
The Big Dragon is available in two configurations; Standard & Basic.
